Agricultural products suffer from extreme weather: Crop failures and rising prices

Harsh weather conditions this year have dealt a heavy blow to Vietnam's agricultural sector, causing crop failures for many products such as lychee, longan, plum, etc., seriously affecting farmers' income and pushing up product prices.

Bac Giang lychee lost its crop: Early-year frost and cold damage have caused the main lychee crop in Bac Giang to plummet to only over 100 tons, compared to 215,000 tons in 2023. The sadness of losing the season has enveloped all lychee gardens, causing farmers to fall into a desperate situation. Seizing the opportunity of scarcity, Bac Giang lychee prices are expected to increase sharply from 30,000 dong/kg or more, compared to 20,000 - 25,000 dong/kg last year.

Longan also shares the same fate: No better than lychee, longan is also severely affected by adverse weather conditions. Prolonged drought in late 2023 and early 2024 has caused Song Ma longan production to decrease by 40%, reaching only 60,000 tons compared to 75,000 tons in 2023. Mai Son longan is even more tragic when it is almost completely lost, with only a few trees bearing fruit. Song Ma longan prices are expected to increase from 25,000 - 30,000 dong/kg, further adding to the burden on consumers.

Moc Chau plum is no exception: Unexpected hail has made Moc Chau plum production halve, causing more difficulties for the local people. Many other agricultural products in Son La also share the same fate, heavily affected by extreme weather.
