Nowadays, it's almost impossible not to a certain spice in a Vietnamese kitchen that enhances the flavor and aroma of dishes, stimulating the taste buds: chili! Rich in vitamins A and B, chili contains capsaicin, a compound that effectively relieves pain and promotes blood circulation. Cultivated extensively across Vietnam, chili is a ubiquitous ingredient found in local markets and supermarkets. This fruit not only merely serves as a distinctive spice but also generates billions of dollars for the country.

Vietnam is one of the world's largest chili producers. According to the Department of Crop Production, chili is primarily cultivated in the provinces of Dong Thap, An Giang, Tien Giang, Soc Trang, Tra Vinh, and Vinh Long, covering a total area of over 7,000 hectares and producing approximately 100,000 tons annually. In central highlands, chili cultivation spans around 4,000-5,000 hectares, yielding about 60,000 tons per year.

Preliminary statistics from the Vietnam Pepper Association (VPA) show that Vietnam's chili exports in the first eight months of 2024 reached 8,800 tons, generating a revenue of over $21.2 million, representing a 6.1% increase in volume and a significant 34.8% increase in value compared to the same period last year.

The primary export markets include China with 7,377 tons, accounting for 83.8% (a slight decrease of 0.2% compared to the same period). Laos is the second largest export market with 970 tons, a 48% increase compared to the first eight months of 2023. The United States ranks third and is also the fastest-growing export market, with 163 tons, a 143.3% increase compared to the same period last year.

Since March 2022, China has allowed Vietnam to export chili to its market, facilitating an increase in Vietnam's export volume. In 2023, chili exports reached $20 million, equivalent to over 10,000 tons, a significant increase of 107% compared to 2022.
