Container ship congestion in Singapore - one of Asia's busiest ports, is spilling over into neighboring Malaysia, disrupting supply chains and causing delays in the shipment of consumer goods.
About 20 container ships are still anchored in a cluster off Port Klang, on Malaysia’s west coast near the capital Kuala Lumpur. Both Port Klang and Singapore lie on the Strait of Malacca, a vital waterway linking Europe and the Middle East with East Asia.
The maritime congestion is occurring as ships avoid the Suez Canal and the Red Sea due to attacks by Houthi rebels, who support Hamas in their war with Israel. Many ships heading to Asia are choosing to sail around the southern tip of Africa, so they cannot refuel or unload cargo in the Middle East.
Port Klang is an important port, because of it is near to Kuala Lumpur, but the current large-scale loading of ships is rare, and many ships are having to unload at the port. Other port areas in Singapore and Tanjong Pelepas - a Malaysian port just across the border in Singapore, are also now fully booked with ships.
Analysts say the current congestion at shipping terminals could last until this August, pushing up container shipping rates in many countries.
