According to forecasts of specialized agencies under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Mekong Delta region is at the peak of the dry season, with saltwater intrusion on a large scale.
In just the past decade, the Mekong Delta region has experienced three dry seasons with very serious levels of salinity: 2025-2016, 2019-2020, and 2023-2024. This year's dry season, saltwater intrusion is considered to be as severe as the 2016 dry season.
From the second half of December 2023 until now, the Mekong Delta region has had almost no rain, some places have rain but the amount is very low. Total rainfall is 62-94% lower than the average for many years. Along with that, saltwater intrusion in 2024 will occur early, in mid-November 2023, it will appear, going deep into the interior of the fields in the provinces Soc Trang, Long An, Tra Vinh, and Bac Lieu; some areas even have serious landslides and subsidence such as Ca Mau.
According to experts, this area may face the disadvantages of climate change, many severe salinity seasons like this year or more in the future.
The above situation can be detrimental to rice production because the end of March is the time when provinces in the Mekong Delta region are about to finish harvesting and will conduct sowing for the 2024 Summer-Autumn rice crop.
So what is the cause of drought and saltwater intrusion in the Mekong Delta in the dry season of 2023 - 2024? And what is their influence? What solutions will the Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development have to resolve the above situation?
