Vietnam surpassed Thailand to reach No. 1 position in exporting durian to China in the first 2 months of this year thanks to out-of-season durians.
Citing data from the General Department of Customs of China, the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association shows that in the first two months of this year, China imported more than 53,000 tons of fresh durian from other countries with a value of more than 283 million USD.
Statistics show that Vietnam has surpassed Thailand to rise to No. 1 position in exporting durian to China with a volume of nearly 33,000 tons, worth 161 million USD, increased 2.4 times in both volume and value compared to the same period last year.
In the first two months of this year, Vietnam's durian market share in China increased to 57% while for the whole of 2023, it only accounts for about 32%.
Meanwhile, Thailand dropped to second in supplying durian to China with a volume of more than 19,000 tons, worth 120 million USD, down 50.3% in volume and 45.2% in value compared to the previous year in the same period.
Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen - General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association - said that Vietnamese durian had the advantage of abundant output, and could be harvested all year round, especially off-season durian not competed against Thai durian.
In addition, fast shipping time is an advantage of Vietnam when exporting durian to China so the price is also competitive. These are the factors that helped Vietnamese durian make great strides in the Chinese market after less than 2 years of entering this market of 1.4 billion people.
