As resistance to pyrethroids, organophosphates, and avermectins continues to increase among key insect pests, Spinetoram has emerged as a next-generation insecticide well suited for Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs and safe agricultural production.
Spinetoram is a semi-synthetic active ingredient belonging to the Spinosyn group (IRAC Group 5). It was developed from Spinosad, offering higher biological efficacy and improved field stability.
Currently, according to the list of pesticides permitted for use in Vietnam under Circular 75/2025/TT-BNNMT, newly signed and issued on December 26, 2025, four companies have registered the active ingredient Spinetoram for commercial business.
MODE OF ACTION
Spinetoram primarily acts on nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) in the insect nervous system, causing excessive neural stimulation. As a result, insects stop feeding rapidly, followed by paralysis and death within 24–48 hours.
This mode of action enables immediate reduction of crop damage after application and shows low cross-resistance with many other insecticide classes.
TARGET PEST SPECTRUM
Spinetoram is highly effective against:
• Diamondback moth, armyworms, and cutworms.
• Fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda).
• Thrips and leafminers.
When applied according to recommendations, it has minimal impact on beneficial insects and does not trigger secondary outbreaks of spider mites.
Role In Ipm & Export-Oriented Production.
• Compatible with IPM, VietGAP, and GlobalGAP systems.
• Short pre-harvest interval (PHI).
• Meets MRL requirements of major markets such as the EU, Japan, and the United States.
• Safe for use during late crop growth stages.
USE PRECAUTIONS
• Sensitive to strong sunlight → apply early morning or late afternoon.
• Avoid repeated consecutive applications → rotate with other IRAC groups (e.g., Groups 6, 18, 28).
• Prevent overuse to maintain long-term efficacy and reduce resistance risk.
CONCLUSION
Spinetoram is a next-generation insecticide that effectively balances high efficacy, crop safety, and sustainability. When properly integrated into IPM programs, it is an ideal solution for modern agriculture and export-oriented production systems.
