In 1973, the active ingredient Permethrin was discovered sold in pharmacies in the US, then was first registered with the UNITED STATES ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY (U.S. EPA) in 1979 and re-registered in 2006. Permethrin is a synthetic active ingredient of the Pyrethroid group which is naturally extracted from Chrysanthemum flowers.
Researchers tested a group of women who used several products containing 4% Permethrin all over their bodies to treat scabies during pregnancy. Another group of pregnant women uses products containing 1% Permethrin for head lice treatment. Permethrin exposure did not affect the pregnancies of any women in either group. According to the analysis of the research team, when 1% Permethrin applied to human skin is brought into the body, most of it will be absorbed quickly. However, if people inhaled Pyrethroid which easily entered the body, no evidence of Permethrin existence was found afterward. Once Permethrin is absorbed, it quickly moves throughout the body for 3 to 4 hours. After that, Permethrin leaves the body mostly through urine, but also possibly through stools.
